ROBSPEED 40TH ANNIVERSARY @ CADWELL MOTO

What’s in a name - Robspeed?

Quite simply, the name of the well-known Lincolnshire Motorcycle dealership in North East Lincolnshire reflects a heritage and history of 40 years of trading – a business that was the brainchild of two Roberts – Robert Stewart and Robert Wilkinson, who started the business in Grimsby in 1986, using their shared Christian names and the speed element of the two wheeled world, hence Robspeed - Number 1 On Two Wheels was born.

Robspeed has been based at no less than 5 different sites in Grimsby during its lifetime and is now located on Cleethorpe Road in Grimsby. The dealership built its reputation the traditional way - through honest service, technical knowledge, and a genuine passion for motorcycling. Over the decades, what began as a local independent motorcycle business, has grown into one of the region’s best-known motorcycle specialists, serving generations of riders from commuters and first-time learners to superbike riders and touring enthusiasts.

Robspeed quickly earned a reputation for combining dealership professionalism with the atmosphere of a rider-focused independent workshop. While many motorcycle businesses have changed hands or disappeared entirely over the years, Robspeed has remained rooted in the same core values of service, value, and experience. Those principles have helped the business grow into North East Lincolnshire’s largest independent motorcycle sales and service centre.

Robspeed has been a dealership for all of the big 4 Japanese manufacturers, serving Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. Yamaha has always sat at the heart of the dealership’s identity and is now the sole manufacturer which Robspeed serves, with Robspeed being a Premier Yamaha Dealership. From lightweight commuter machines and iconic Fazer models to the latest MT Hyper-Naked bikes and R-Series superbikes, Robspeed is known locally as a destination for Yamaha riders. Although the dealership is exclusive to Yamaha new motorcycles, it continues to stock a large range of used bikes from multiple manufacturers.

Robspeed’s long-standing success has been mainly due to its workshop and technical expertise. The dealership highlights decades of factory-trained experience among its technicians, with specialist knowledge covering diagnostics, servicing, MOT testing, repairs, and performance upgrades. In an era where modern motorcycles are increasingly electronic and complex, experienced technicians have become as valuable as the machines themselves.

Robspeed has also adapted alongside the changing motorcycle industry. From carburetted sports bikes of the late 1980s and 1990s to today’s ride-by-wire, electronics-packed bikes, Robspeed has evolved without losing the independent dealership feel that many riders value. The showroom now combines modern Yamaha models, used bike sales, accessories, clothing, servicing, finance options, and MOT facilities, all under one roof.

Customer feedback over the years reflects the dealership’s rider-first reputation. Reviews frequently praise the approachable nature of the staff, strong product knowledge, fair part-exchange deals, and preparation standards of used motorcycles. Several customers describe travelling long distances specifically to purchase bikes from Robspeed, highlighting the trust the dealership has developed beyond its local area. With a team of just ten staff, who have all been with the business for many years, also reflects the success and sustainability of the business.

Today, Robspeed Motorcycles stands as an example of a traditional motorcycle dealership that successfully evolved through changing times while staying true to its roots. Four decades after opening its doors, the dealership continues to represent the enduring culture of British motorcycling - where experience, community, and passion for riding matter just as much as the motorcycles themselves.
